27-R An introduction to R

Milan van Can: milan.vancan@ru.nl

ECTS: 1

Working with datasets is a core part of research, and often a challenging one. Managing, analysing, and visualising your data can be difficult at first, when it’s all new to you. This three-day workshop is an introduction to R and RStudio, among the most versatile software available for data management and analysis. Together, they let you work within a single system while drawing on tools that other researchers have written and shared freely. With a hands-on approach, we will cover the basics and build a general understanding of how R and RStudio work, so that you can go on to use them independently in your own research.

Workshop content:

The workshop consists of four parts:

  1. R and RStudio: the language and the environment. Through worked examples, we will cover the basics of data management. You will practise setting up projects and scripts, importing your data, and transforming it as you need (recoding, summarising, and so on) using the tidyverse, among other packages.
  2. Visualisation. You will practise using R to produce a range of graphs with the ggplot2 package.
  3. Basic analyses. You will work through the most common analyses in R: correlations, t-tests, and linear regression.
  4. R Markdown. To tie the workshop together, you will take your first steps towards making reproducible documents (HTML, Word, and slides). R Markdown lets you combine text, statistical output, and visualisations in a single document, so that you can present your findings at the push of a button.

Throughout the workshop you can work with practice datasets built into R, and there will also be time to work with your own research data, so that you can apply what you have learned directly to your own projects.

Requirements: Laptop with R and RStudio.
